To consolidate the cooperation between Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center (SUFAIC) and UC Davis, and discuss collaboration plan for the next year, Ermias Kebreab, Associate Dean for Global Engagement of College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, UC Davis paid a two day visit to SUFAIC in Weifang, Shandong Province.
On December 15th, 2019, Associate Dean Ermias visited the planting base of SUFAIC in Hanting National Modern Agriculture Industrial Park, learning about progress of the base in developing and trial planting of new vegetable varieties as well as fertigation facilities equipped in the greenhouses.
Associate Dean Ermias visited the Food Innovation Works of SUFAIC accompanied by the Head of International Cooperation Department of SUFAIC, learning about the latest progress of Food Innovation Works in developing the FSMP (Food for Special Medical Purposes) products like chick pea flour, quinoa flour and high oleic peanut oil.
On the morning of December 16th, 2019, Deputy Dean Ermias had a discussion with Director Liu of Weifang National Comprehensive Pilot Zone for Agriculture Opening Up and Development as well as SUFAIC management. At the meeting, Deputy Dean Ermias and Director Ji Wei of SUFAIC reached a consensus that the cooperation between both sides will make substantial progress in 2020. Next year, UC Davis and SUFAIC plan to cooperate in the following two areas: 1) develop functional food with peanut protein and peanut polypeptide as raw materials; 2) Demonstrate the advanced agricultural technology of UC Davis like soil health improvement and fertigation in the strawberry planting base of SUFAIC in Hanting National Modern Agriculture Industrial Park in Weifang.
Director Liu of Weifang National Comprehensive Pilot Zone highly appreciated the achievements of SUFAIC, mentioning that the Comprehensive Pilot Zone will make every effort to support the collaborative projects between SUFAIC and UC Davis in Weifang.
On the afternoon of December 16th, 2019, Mr. Kebreab met with top management of Weifang Financial Holding Group and Weifang Nongchuang Group. In the meeting, Yu Xinhua, the Party Secretary and Chairman of Weifang Financial Holding Group and Weifang Nongchuang Group put forwards the following areas where he intends to collaborate with UC Davis:
Soil testing and soil remediation;
Provide seeds suitable for China, especially for Weifang;
Collaborate on outputting the advanced livestock breeding technology for swine, sheep, cattle, dairy cows, etc. of UC Davis to Weifang;
Collaborate on organizing academic activities and training regarding improving the quality and yield of crops and animals
Secretary Yu of Weifang Nongchuang Group mentioned that on behalf of Weifang Municipal government, his company is is currently building a service platform to support the development of livestock and planting industry in Weifang. It is the basic work of this platform to improve the soil, introduce high-quality fruit and vegetable seeds, good species of pig, cow, sheep, etc. as well as advanced breeding technology into Weifang. In this aspect, he hopes to get technical support from Davis and suggests SUFAIC and UC Davis join in the construction of this platform through joint venture, partnership or other ways of cooperation preferred by SUFAIC and UC Davis.
At the end of the meeting, Secretary Yu extends an invitation to the top management of UC Davis, hope to have a further discussion on substantial collaboration on the areas he mentioned above.
