On November 4th, 2018, Prof. Kent J. Bradford of Plant Sciences Department, Director of World Food Center and Seed Biotechnology Center at the University of California, Davis, arrived at Weifang for a three-day visit at the invitation of Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center (SUFAIC).
On that morning, Prof. Bradford visited Shouguang City and Qingzhou City for investigating the development of seed industry. In Huasheng Agriculture Research Institute, Shouguang City, Prof. Bradford had an in-depth discussion with the general manager on how to solve the problem of ununiform seed germination and other issues. At the end of the meeting, both sides reached an collaboration intention on seed R&D, and taking advantage of the power of Seed Biotechnology Center of UC Davis to solve the breeding problems plaguing Huasheng.
After preliminary investigation and field visits, Prof. Bradford gained a detailed understanding of the seed industry development in Weifang. On the morning of November 5th, 2018, the Sino-US Cross-border Germplasm Symposium was grandly held in the conference room, the 10th Floor of SUFAIC. At the symposium, Shen Guohua, Director of Weifang Agriculturae Bureau, commented that with the support of Sino-US cooperation center, Sino-Israel cooperation center and Sino-Netherlands cooperation center on developing international cooperation, agriculture in Weifang will better play a leading role in China. Guan Congyong, Deputy Director of Promotion and Coordination Office of Food Valley of China, briefed the participants on the agriculture development in Hanting District. Prof. Bradford commented that based on the current development of seed industry in Weifang and through the platform of SUFAIC, Seed Central of UC Davis will collaborate with Weifang seed enterprises in the field of breeding, technical development, plant nutrition, soil health, drip irrigation, etc. Representatives of Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center, Shandong Hualiang Seeds Co.,Ltd., Weifang Seeds Co.,Ltd. and Shouguang Lusheng Agriculture Scientific Development Co.,Ltd. attended the symposium.
In September, 2018, the State Council of China approved the construction of Weifang National Comprehensive Pilot Zone for Opening-up Development of Agriculture Industry (hereinafter referred to as “Comprehensive Pilot Zone”), which is the first free trade zone in the agricultural field approved by the Chinese government after the 19th NPC (National People’s Congress). It is set forth in the construction plan of Comprehensive Pilot Zone that to construct an international exchange and collaboration base for agricultural technology and talents as well as a Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center for developing collaboration with world famous universities. With the support of the University of California, Davis, Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center will certainly play a greater role in promoting the development of Comprehensive Pilot Zone.
On that afternoon, Prof. Bradford visited Hanting National Modern Agriculture Industrial Park and discussed with Director Su Guanghui of Agricultural Bureau of Hanting District on operation mode and future plan of the park which was followed by a visit to 3 applied technology demonstration bases of UC Davis and SUFAIC: Demonstration Base of Biomass Comprehensive Utilization Technology, Demonstration Base of Biochar Soil Health and Fertigation Technology as well as Cross-border Germplasm R&D Base.
