High-level Experts Journey to Weifang - American Agricultural Experts Attend 2018 Sino-US Soil Remed

As part of “High-level Experts Journey to Weifang - American Agricultural Experts visit Weifang” organized by Weifang Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, 2018 Sino-US Soil Remediation High End Symposium was grandly held in International Conference Center, Food Valley of China, Weifang on May 25th, 2018. Co-sponsored by Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center, UCD, University of California, Davis, Weifang Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Hanting District Association of Science and Technology and Shandong Wolf Bioengineering Company, this symposium aims to provide guidance for Weifang soil remediation industry in developing strategies and directions, demonstrate and popularize both domestic and international soil remediation technologies in Weifang and promote deep collaboration on soil remediation among industry, academia and professional research institutions both at home and abroad.

More than forty people attended this symposium including international experts represented by Jan Hopmans, Professor of vadose zone hydrology, Associate Dean and Director of International Programs Office, CA&ES, University of California, Davis, Minghua Zhang, Professor of the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources and Associate Director for Far East Program, International Programs Office, CA&ES, University of California, Davis, Sanjai Parikh, Associate Professor of the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis and Chongyang Li, Postdoctoral Scholar of University of California, Davis as well as domestic experts represented by Baogui Zhang and Gang Wang, Professors of the Department of Soil and Water Sciences, College of Resources and Environmental Sciences, Chinese Agricultural University and Xingmei Liu, Associate Professor of College of Resources and Environmental Sciences, Zhejiang University and local government officials represented by Xuewen Liu, Associate Researcher of Promotion and Coordination Office, Food Valley of China and Fang Wang, Director of Weifang International Talents Exchange Center as well as company representatives engaged in industry development and technical applications.

Speaking at the symposium, Xuewen Liu mentioned that as a platform of converting old driving forces into new ones in Shandong, Food Valley of China strives to construct the National Comprehensive Pilot Zone in which Food Valley of China will cover an area of 113.12 square kilometers. This demonstrates enormous advantages of Food Valley of China in attracting projects and investment and will significantly move forward agricultural development and industrialization.

In his speech, Dean Jan Hopmans extended his gratitude to Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center for the invitation which is followed by a report on factors leading to soil problems. He expressed that soil is a fundamental element in the whole planting system of crops; soil supply for farmland is a challenge and it is necessary to solve energy shortage; heavy metal pollution is closely linked to food safety and water resources. Finally he called on participants to join hands in solving soil problems through combining various factors.

Professor Minghua Zhang presented on agricultural management and practices as well as the relationship between pesticides and soil. Then based on case study, she introduced the impact of pesticides on soil and establishment of the PU database.

Professor Sanjai Parikh presented the role of biochar in solving soil problems and immobilizing organic matter. Different biochar varies in their absorption to pesticides. Based on the tests, it is found that addition of biochar can significantly reduce pesticides residue on crops, restore soil and increase germination rate.

Professor Gang Wang reported on microscale soil-microbe interactions & bioremediation.

Professor Xingmei Liu elaborated on long-term treatment methods of heavy metal pollution.

Dr. Chongyang Li focused on introducing an alternate drying and wetting method which can minimize cadmium and arsenic uptake and heavy metal pollution status in Shandong and China at large.

On the afternoon, the experts visited Jiahexing Fruits and Vegetables Professional Cooperatives and discussed with the responsible person on solutions to soil remediation of facility vegetables. The experts unanimously agreed that soil sample analysis should be made first to identify the reason and then solutions will be developed. Experts are full of confidence in the soil remediation in Weifang and are willing to offer assistance and technical support.

Afterwards, experts visited Xiaole Watermelon Base and Bofeng Planting Cooperative.

On that afternoon, experts discussed on the establishment of UC Davis Knowledge Transfer Base in National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park in Hanting District. Guanghui Su, Director of Hanting District Agricultural Bureau, Guangzhi Li, Deputy Director of Management and Service Center of National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park in Hanting District, Kaifeng Song, Vice General Manager of Weifang Bincheng Investment Company were present at the meeting.

On the morning of May 26th, 2018, experts visited fertigation facilities as well as new eggplant and tomato varieties in Shouguang Vegetable Industrial Group.

At the second stop, the experts visited Shouguang Heng Shu Wu Jiang Agricultural Development Group - a leading enterprise in agricultural industrialization in Shandong. Professors of UC Davis mentioned that the biggest challenge of this enterprise is soil hardening and soil-borne diseases which will be solved by collaboration between both sides through the platform of Sino-US Food and Agriculture Innovation Center.

On the afternoon, experts visited Qingdao Wo Feng Yuan Modern Agriculture Company and listened to the introduction of the blueberry base in this company.

Visit the vineyard in Shanyin Village of Yinma Town.

This two-day workshop provided a good exchange platform for both sides, and brought the advanced international soil remediation technologies to Weifang. It will promote the scientific research of soil remediation, improve the level of soil pollution control and remediation technology in Weifang, promote the progress of soil remediation work in our city, and promote the communication between the domestic industry and the international advanced technologies, allowing us learn the status of international advanced soil remediation technologies.
